Ley

Ley
/leɪ/ (say lay)

noun
Thomas John, 1880–1947, Australian Nationalist party politician, born in England; found guilty of murder in 1947.
Thomas Ley was elected to the NSW parliament in 1917. Known as `Lemonade Ley' for his support of the temperance movement, he was minister for justice from 1922 until 1925, when he successfully contested the federal seat of Barton. In the next three years, however, one of his opponents disappeared and another died in suspicious circumstances. Ley was never formally accused but his involvement seems likely. After losing the 1928 election he left Australia for England. In 1947 he was found guilty of the murder of John Bain Mudie, whose body was found in a chalk pit in Surrey, and was committed to Broadmoor criminal lunatic asylum.
